Privacy directive to spark demand for content tools
The Irish Times - Thursday, April 5, 2012
DATA PRIVACY is about to become big business, and a research group within the Waterford Institute of Technology hopes a long-standing interest in the area will translate into fresh projects with EU backing.
Europe’s proposed new directive on data protection, which EU commissioner Viviane Reding launched in January and has said she hopes will make it through the European Parliament by next year, will bring stricter data management requirements – enforced by significant fines – for businesses, as well as a novel “right to be forgotten” for EU citizens. This would require businesses that manage user data and uploaded user content to remove certain types of information at a user’s request.
While Europe could choose to bring in the directive as currently formulated, or require changes, the almost-certain outcome is that once a new directive is agreed, businesses will need to be able to hit the ground running with privacy-oriented tools that can manage content and personal data.
This is an area that has been of particular interest to WIT’s Telecommunications Software and Systems Group (TSSG). Researcher Shane Dempsey says TSSG has developed two projects in this area already in ongoing collaborations with other European research groups and industry.
One project, called the Semantic Room, allows observers to monitor and isolate activity across a number of financial services networks in the hope of spotting suspicious activity and preventing serious information breaches and network attacks. While the activity can be monitored, the identity of those on the network is kept anonymous but can be referred to a regulator for deeper investigation if needed. Elements of that project are now being considered for commercialisation by some of their European partners, he says.
2,104 jobs lost as Game closes 277 stores
Tuesday 27th March 2012 RTE News / Ireland
The administrators of collapsed video games retailer Game said today they will close 277 stores in the UK and Ireland, leading to 2,089 job losses.
Game has 14 stores in the Republic of Ireland and 121 jobs will be lost at its stores in Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Galway, Monaghan and Athlone.
Administrators PWC Ireland confirmed that 13 stores in Northern Ireland have closed or will close with the loss of 110 jobs.
The UK operations of the retailer, which trades as Game and Gamestation, collapsed into administration after it suffered dire trading in recent months, while some suppliers refused to stock the business.
The administrators said the remaining 333 stores in the UK and Ireland, which employ 2,814 staff, will continue to trade while they try to find a buyer for the remainder of the business.
The five stores in Northern Ireland that will remain open are in Belfast (Donegall Arcade and the Abbey Centre), Newtownards, Craigavon and Derry.
Some staff at the Irish branches are considering a sit-in in pursuit of enhanced redundancy entitlements.
PWC have told staff the company will not be paying any redundancy and they will have to apply to the State for the bare minimum statutory redundancy payments.
Manager of the Blanchardstown branch Will Donoghue said he had been called by his regional manager this morning and told to cease trading immediately.
Mr Donoghue, who has been with the company for 17 years, said the staff at the Irish stores are going to organise what they will do next.
Game employs over 10,000 people at 1,270 stores in nine European countries and in Australia.
Game stores that will close
Tuesday 27th March 2012 by Express & Star
Administrators for stricken entertainment group Game are closing of hundreds of stores with the loss of thousands of jobs, it emerged today.
Eight outlets in Staffordshire and the Black Country were shut today, including shops in Stafford, Cannock, Wolverhampton and Walsall.
Scores of jobs will go in the region and more than 2,000 nationwide as a result Game and Gamestation stores being closed by administrators PwC.
The shops in the region that have shut are in Gaolgate Street, Stafford; Market Hall Street, Cannock; Old Square Shopping Centre, Walsall; Churchill Parade, Dudley; Merry Hill Shopping Centre, Dudley; Dudley Street, Wolverhampton; The Cornbow Centre, Halesowen and a shop in Worcester Street, Kidderminster.
The closures are among 277 shops shutting that will trigger the loss of 2,104 jobs across the UK. However, the remaining 333 stores will continue to trade while a buyer is sought.
These include the other of the two Game stores in Dudley Street Wolverhampton along with the Gamestation shop in the city’s Wulfrun Centre. Game in Park Street, Walsall will also remain open as well as the shop in Queens Square, West Bromwich and one of the two Merry Hill shops.
Mike Jervis, joint administrator and partner at PwC, said: “The recent job losses are regrettable but will place the company in a stronger position while we explore opportunities to conclude a sale. My team and I will be doing all we can to help the affected employees.”
The chain’s demise follows a string of profit warnings and the failure of nervous suppliers, including Electronic Arts and Nintendo, to go on providing new games.
The retailer had a £21 million rent bill due yesterday and faces a £12m wage bill this weekend.
